Overview of Bond County

Bond County, situated in Illinois, was established in 1817 after being carved out of Madison County. The county derived its name from Shadrach Bond, who was serving as the delegate from the Illinois Territory to the United States Congress at that time. Bond went on to become the first governor of Illinois, holding the position from 1818 to 1822. The primary city in the county, Greenville, had a post office starting from 1819 and was officially incorporated as a town in 1855, later attaining city status in 1872. The origin of the town’s name has several theories associated with it. Some suggest it was named after Greenville, North Carolina, which itself honored Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. Another theory attributes the name to early settler Thomas White, who described the area as “so green and nice.” A third possibility is that Greenville took its name from Green P. Rice, the town’s first merchant.

In 1824, a vote on slavery took place in Bond County, resulting in 240 votes against and 63 votes in favor of slavery. Although Illinois was not a slave state, its proximity to slave states such as Missouri and Kentucky allowed for the continued practice of “indentured servitude,” which some slave owners used to retain their slaves even in a free state.

At one point in Bond County, there were 14 registered slaves owned by eight individuals. Silas Register, one of the slaves, adopted his surname after being registered at the county clerk’s office. Register, who outlived all other known slaves in Bond County, passed away in 1872 at the age of 76. Some of the slaves found their final resting place in the county alongside the families they were indentured to. Notably, a former slave named Fanny achieved her freedom after her owners relocated out of the state. She worked in town to earn money and eventually purchased her husband, Stephen, at an auction in Missouri.
