Overview of Blackford County

Blackford County is situated in the east central region of Indiana, USA. It was named in honor of Judge Isaac Blackford, an influential figure who served as the first speaker of the Indiana General Assembly and had a long tenure as the chief justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. Established in 1838, the county is divided into four townships, with Hartford City serving as the county seat. Within its boundaries, Blackford County houses two incorporated cities and one incorporated town, alongside various unincorporated communities and ghost towns. Spanning an area of 165.58 square miles (428.9 km2), it ranks as the fourth smallest county in Indiana.

With the construction of rail lines in the 1860s and 1870s, additional communities emerged around railway stops. Starting in the late 1880s, the discovery of natural gas and crude oil in the county and the surrounding region triggered an economic boom known as the Indiana Gas Boom. Manufacturers flocked to the area to capitalize on the affordable energy and access to rail facilities. This boom period lasted approximately 15 years and had a profound impact on the county’s population, peaking at 17,213 in 1900. The increased prosperity resulted in significant upgrades to the county’s infrastructure, with wooden structures being replaced by durable masonry buildings. Many historic landmarks from that time, including Montpelier’s Carnegie Library and several buildings in Hartford City’s Courthouse Square Historic District, still exist today.

Agriculture remains a vital sector in Blackford County and has grown in importance following the decline of several large manufacturing industries during the 20th century. In 2010, approximately 72 percent of the county’s land was dedicated to corn and soybean cultivation, while other crops such as wheat and hay are also grown in the area.
