The establishment of the county was proposed on July 7, 1914, and officially ratified on November 3, 1914, through a constitutional amendment. It was named after Augustus Bacon, a former United States Senator from Georgia who held segregationist views.
According to the data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, Bacon County spans a total area of 286 square miles (740 km2). This includes 259 square miles (670 km2) of land and 27 square miles (70 km2) of water, accounting for approximately 9.5% of the total area. The majority and western section of the county lie within the Satilla River sub-basin, which is part of the broader St. Marys River-Satilla River basin. The eastern and half of the southeastern edge of the county are situated in the Little Satilla River sub-basin, also within the St. Marys-Satilla River basin.
Alma, the county’s primary city, has gained recognition as the Blueberry Capital of Georgia. Every year, the city hosts the Annual Blueberry Festival to celebrate the significance of the blueberry crop in Bacon County and the state as a whole. Although blueberries are native to the Americas, their cultivation as a domesticated crop began in the early 20th century. Commercial blueberry production was introduced in Georgia in 1925 when blueberry seedlings from Florida were grown and bred at the University of Georgia’s Tifton Campus. Researchers and farmers collaborated to develop blueberry varieties suitable for successful commercial cultivation in Georgia, leading to the release of the ‘Tifblue’ cultivar in 1955.
