Overview of Anderson County

Anderson County (county code AN) is situated in East Central Kansas, within the Central region of the United States. As of the 2020 census, the county had a population of 7,836 residents. The county seat and largest city is Garnett. Spanning an area of 584 square miles (1,510 km2), Anderson County comprises 580 square miles (1,500 km2) of land and 4.1 square miles (11 km2) (0.7%) of water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

 

The area that encompasses Anderson County has been inhabited by nomadic Native Americans for thousands of years. From the 16th to the 18th century, the Kingdom of France claimed ownership over significant portions of North America. Following the French and Indian War in 1762, France secretly ceded New France to Spain as per the Treaty of Fontainebleau. In 1802, Spain returned most of the land to France, but retained ownership of approximately 7,500 square miles. Then, in 1803, the United States acquired a large portion of the land for what is now modern-day Kansas through the Louisiana Purchase, covering an area of 828,000 square miles at a rate of 2.83 cents per acre.

 

The Kansas Territory was organized in 1854, and in 1861, Kansas became the 34th state in the United States. Anderson County was established in 1855 and was named in honor of Joseph C. Anderson, a legislator during the territorial period. In 1884, the first photograph of a tornado was captured in Anderson County. According to the 2000 census, the county had a population of 8,110 people, with 3,221 households and 2,264 families residing in the area.
