Overview of Adams County

Adams County, located in the state of Iowa, is a county with a population of 3,704 according to the 2020 census, making it the least-populous county in the state. The county seat is Corning. With a population density of 8.7212/sq mi (3.3673/km2), the county recorded a population composition where 97.11% identified with a single race. Non-Hispanic Whites accounted for 94.20% of the population, while other racial groups included Black (0.32%), Hispanic (1.13%), Native American (0.51%), Asian (0.35%), and individuals reporting other races or multiple races (3.48%). Out of the 1,888 housing units, 1,614 were occupied.


Established by the state legislature in 1851, Adams County was named in honor of either John Adams, the second President of the United States, or his son John Quincy Adams, the sixth President, as sources differ on the exact attribution. The county was formally organized and separated from Pottawattamie County on March 12, 1853. Over time, the county’s original size was reduced due to the creation of Montgomery and Union counties. Initially, Quincy, Iowa served as the first county seat until it was relocated to Corning in 1872. The county spans a total area of 426 square miles (1,100 km2), with 423 square miles (1,100 km2) being land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.5%) consisting of water.
