Overview of Adair County

Adair County, situated in the state of Kentucky in the United States, is home to a population of 18,903 as per the 2020 census. The county seat and sole municipality is Columbia. It was established on December 11, 1801, carved out of portions of Green County. The county’s name pays tribute to John Adair, a prominent figure during that time, serving as the Speaker of the House in Kentucky and later becoming the Governor of Kentucky from 1820 to 1824. Notably, Adair County boasts a notable presence of surviving American Chestnut trees, a rarity in the country.

The county’s inception led to the selection of Columbia as its county seat in the subsequent year, with the construction of the first courthouse taking place in 1806. John Adair, the county’s namesake, had a remarkable background, having served as a Revolutionary War and Northwest Indian War veteran. He commanded Kentucky troops in the Battle of New Orleans and eventually became the eighth Governor of Kentucky. Adair County marked the 44th county to be organized in Kentucky, out of a total of 120 counties.

Geographically, Adair County spans a total area of 412 square miles (1,070 km2), with 405 square miles (1,050 km2) comprising land and 7.1 square miles (18 km2) (1.7%) consisting of water bodies. It falls within the Pennyroyal Plateau region of Kentucky and is situated in the western Appalachia area. Forested areas cover over 40% of the county’s land, while the Green River serves as the prominent waterway, though not commercially navigable. Notably, the Green River was dammed to create Green River Lake, a significant feature of Green River Lake State Park, which spans across Adair and Taylor counties.
