Houses Announce Debut Full Length

Friday, August 27th, 2010

houses-folded“I got laid off from my job at the end of last year and decided I needed a change. My girlfriend put in her two weeks and we moved out to a little cabin in Papaikou, Hawaii. It’s a pretty remote place outside of Hilo (i.e no plumbing/electricity/gas). We worked for meals during the day cultivating microorganisms and learning the basics of sustainable living. We drank showered and cooked with rain water. In our downtime, she would paint and I would record.

We’d have to light candles in an effort to save solar power to keep my computer running. We inspired each other a lot out there, and I think it shows on the album. The music comes from a place of love and ease. The video for Endless Spring was shot there in our spare time, and the music was sketched out loosely over the course of a few months. We just kind of melted into one person. We were able to keep our heads above water for a few months before we both went broke and moved back to Chicago. I put together all the arrangements and field recordings, and that became All Night. The album was pressed to vinyl on a vintage Neumann cutting lathe and then sent through a series of old analog mastering equipment. It then underwent a digital transfer. The idea is that everyone can hear the very first pressing of All Night. It’s a sonically intimate record and we wanted to capture that feeling in the production as well.” - Houses

Dominant Legs Release Debut EP Today!

Friday, August 20th, 2010

dominantlegsdominantlegs

The great West Coast calls to Dominant Legs, and Dominant Legs, in turn, calls San Francisco home. Capitalizing on newfound free-time, as a result of being laid off from his job as an office assistant, Ryan Lynch began to write the glittering ballads and blurred-out pop songs that, with the addition of Hannah Hunt, make Dominant Legs. Lynch, who is also the guitarist of Girls, and Hunt, both San Francisco Bay Area-natives, were introduced through mutual friends and began collaborating when Hunt moved back to California after studying Architecture in New York. Lynch had been honing the band’s misty, nostalgic sound for a while, experimenting with songwriting as a kid and having spent the previous few years playing guitar in another SF band. Hunt spent her childhood singing and performing; her eternal passion for music led her to dive back in after years of not performing. With Lynch on guitar and vocals, and Hunt on vocals and keys, Dominant Legs’ sincere and dance-y pop songs tap into a sound that is at once naively sweet and self-consciously tragic.

Young at Love and Life is available now wherever music is sold, including directly from us! They will also be playing three shows coming up with Mystery Jets:

09/14 New York, NY Mercury Lounge
09/15 New York, NY Mercury Lounge

The Delta Mirror Announce US Tour “Going To Town” mp3

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

gazzebo_blurchimp1

The Delta Mirror is a cocktail of all your past loves, the ones you wish had stuck around, and check up on from time to time even though you’ve moved on. They were made from the sprained fingers and broken records of mid 90’s hip hop. They were made from the bent circuits of electronica, dead IDM lap tops and broken shoegaze strings. They were made from the injured spirit of a folk singer’s broken heart. Alongside bands like The Big Pink and The Fuck Buttons, The Delta Mirror see’s the things that made our past relationships work and brings them together creating the ideal love. Craig Gordon and David Bolt started out as a hip hop two piece in the late 90’s and have been writing music in some form ever since. With the addition of Karrie K on bass, their sound has progressed to an ambient mix of shoegazy guitar and gothic vocals, but their production has held onto the same boom bap button pushing they started with. Machines That Listen is The Delta Mirror’s debut long play. Each song on this 9 track collection is a story that takes place in a different room of a hospital. Track 2 “and the radio played on” tells of a dying elderly man and his wife’s last moments together, while “hold me down just don’t let me go” is told from the perspective of an ER nurse treating a stab victim. Listening to this record is like walking through the halls of Bellevue or Cedars Sinai listening to a score that is re-written daily. The Delta Mirror has shared the stage with bands like Sleepy Sun, Voices Voices, EGADZ!, Jogger, Odd Nosdam, Tape Deck Mountain, The Mathematicians, Oliver Future and Healamonster & Tarsier. Later this year Lefse will release a collection of remixes from Machines that Listen put together from an all star cast of bands and producers.

Sunglasses Out 6/15!

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

New Sunglasses EP out 6/15. Pre-order now in the Lefse store!
sunglasses_ep_cover-lg8000 bam bam (Samuel Cooper) & Baby Seal ( Brady Keehn), the two members of Sunglasses met at Savannah College of Art and Design. Samuel majoring in Film and Television, Brady majoring in Sound Design. Samuel Cooper originally growing up in North Georgia, and Brady Keehn from Washington D.C, the two came to Savannah in search of finding creative friends who shared the same interest and goals. They first started working together on Samuel’s Senior thesis film, MILES. The film, written and directed Cooper, was an 8 1/2 inspired black and white musical short film in which Keehn supervised the sound design. After the project was completed they were surprised that the work flow was so consistent and enjoyable that the two immediately began the next project, Sunglasses. With Sunglasses, the two wanted to combine Samuel’s love for pop songs with Brady’s obsession with bass and multi-layered beats. Recently completing their debut EP, Sunglasses plans on touring the East Coast slowly making their way to New York City, eventually moving to Maryland to record the full length at Brady’s Lake House.

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

keepaway

NEW YORK, New York: Many people aspire to make music. Some people aspire to make art. A few people aspire to change lives. Three people aspire to literally tear a hole in the fabric of your life and soul: KEEPAWAY. Ever since the blogs caught on to the commanding psych-pop of Brooklyn’s Keepaway, audiences have demanded a record release. Here it is: Baby Style, for when you want to feel young, but you got to stay old. Out May 18th on Lefse Records, the Baby Style EP has already caught the attention of your favorite critics with its lead single, “Yellow Wings.” Garnering effusive accolades from the likes of Pitchfork, Fader, and Stereogum, Keepaway is ready to celebrate.

On May 18th at the Mercury Lounge in Manhattan, Keepaway will play a special EP release concert and launch a brand-new limited edition clothing line, called Keepaway Klose. The Keepaway Klose apparel brings Baby Style to life, and will be available for purchase for the first time at the release party.

The supporting line-up is no less astounding: wicked hot stuff Dom bring their arena-ready lo-fi, Rewards sees Chairlift’s Aaron Pfenning delving deep into synth-swept hooks, and the Tony Castles will play their patented brand post-punk chillkraut. Manning the decks will be superlative party-starter Professor DJ Rainstick of Cool Places Soundsystem.

It’s going to be a killer show.
